Well...obviously check the Oil, Coolant, and Brake Fluid Levels before attempting to start it. The Brake fluid level is extremely important if the car is standard and they share the same resevoir. Test the brakes before you get out on the road...Check the tires for dry rot. Dont rev the engine to get it to run smoothly until the engine warms up. If you rev it to try to level out the idle then your probably causing damage, theres a reason its not idling correctly and its probably something that will go away on its own.
I cant think of anything else that would cause damage if you tried to start it. I would suggest your first step be changing all the oils(Engine,Radiator) and I would have the brakes bled. Spark plugs and wires are a must. and it wouldnt hurt to put some fuel injector cleaner in the first couple tanks.
