No way :) I'm unafraid of mechanical things and I understand the basic systems inside a car, but I have no experience with fixing them and am not about to learn by trial and error on my Saab. Additionally, I have no tools, no garage, not even a driveway, and it was about 20 degrees out and snowy, so it was just all-around safest to hand it over to a pro. :)
It was my usual indy shop, and they'd quoted "around a thousand" for the HG job, which seemed comparable to some other info I'd found in previous posts. A little on the high side, but this is Boston so I'm accustomed to that. I told them to fix whatever else was broken so of course they found plenty to do. The main things were coolant temp sensor, new belt and pulleys/tensioner, and a new hose somewhere (the hose alone cost $110. Was it knitted from the eyelashes of dead baby seals and lined with platinum?? Was it delivered from Sweden by hand? I hope it's worth what I paid for it, sheesh). There were also minor things like pints of various fluids, light bulbs, etc. Three days in the shop, around $1500 total about evenly split between parts and labor. They reported that the inside of the engine looked "fine" so at least that's some good news.
Is there anything else I should have asked them to do while they had it opened up?
