Anders,
I haven't heard this since a guy tried to sell me a brake job for around $1000. One of the rear pads was worn down more than the others. He said I needed new pads, rotors, and both calipers. Turned out the pad was hanging up on the rusty slide. It was rust, but on the outside. Some filing, a good grease, and a new set of pads for $25, and it worked great.
It seems like most folks on this board just replace the offending caliper. I trust your expertise on this, it is just the first time I remember hearing it. Is the braking hydraulics of the later 9k still diagonal? Does this reduce the effect a newer caliper? You've got me rethinking all of this! Should calipers be replaced every X years, assuming less efficient workings?
All these years I thought that guy was just ripping me off!
