The display is called the EDU (electronic display unit, I think), and it has circuitry that also drives the gas gauge. The circuitry is right on a board that is part of the display.
Two things come to mind - the first is that the board sits in a little connector. If the board is loose, as things warm up it rattles out and no longer makes contact. Merely re-seating the board will fix that. The less attractive one is that one of the components on the board has developed a fault that occurs when it warms up. It may be as simple as a bad solder joint, or it could be internal to a chip. The solution there is to replace the EDU board, unless you are very electronically adept.

The cabin air filter is on the right side (looking foward, passenger side, US) of the engine compartment, behind the false firewall. Open the hood, and at the base of the windshield you'll see a horizontal panel. Remove the panel, and on the passenger side (US cars), you'll see a plastic box with a cover on top, roughly rectangular. The filter is behind that cover.
