I think you'll find that most here will state that you are not nuts. I'm one of them. Spending $1000 on a 17-year-old car (which you also own outright) makes sense because it's the "devil you know". For me, the math usually seems to work out for these repair issues to just fix the car that I have (two 9ks, for sake of disclosure). I expect to get many more miles out of them (200,000 and 181,000 miles respectively).
However, other people will think that you ARE nuts. My parents just shake their heads when I talk about car stuff. My father-in-law, while amazed by the price of a clutch job (when I do the labor), also thinks Saab should give me a free car because I got a second one. Most of my friends think that I'm nuts to spend time fixing my cars, yet they never complain when they are riding with me!
The most valuable resource you have is TIME--weigh the amount you spend fixing the car versus other things. If you are willing to spend the time wrenching, then it's worth it.
Best wishes (and if you were around PA, I'd love to help out, too).
