LH info for alexsacalis. VERY long Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I did some checking in my LH manual. The first thing I have to emphasize is that all of the codes should be cleared, and then see what pops back up. Some of these faults may have been around for quite a while. From the codes, I can tell the Indy has an ISAT Scan Tool, and with that he can do lots of neat things, including clear the faults.
Let's go through them-
22440 is a rich mixture, and the O2 sensor can't adjust for it. That could be the O2 sensor, or it could be that things are running rich, and the O2 sensor is just telling the truth. The first test is to check the O2 sensor.
22441 is fuel-air mixture too rich at idle, usually due to extra air added, due to air leakage. Check for an air leak.
22452 is fuel-air mixture to rich at idle, due to AMM, fuel injectors, or FPR. They recommend checking Fuel Pressure. It should be a 3 BAR FPR in your car.
25651 is signal from AMM is too low. Which means that from other sensor readings, it thinks there should be more air flowing through the AMM. Which could also mean that it is getting in some other way, like an air leak. Or, since it's running rich, it may be the AMM reading low. They recommend checking the AMM. I posted something on AMM checking last week.
39371 doesn't exist. There are no 39XXX codes; only 38XXX. If I were to guess and say the 8 is a 9, and the 7 is a poorly drawn 7, 38321 is, gasp, a bad AIC. But that's just a guess.
Same with 22450 - it isn't a LH code, at least no according to the Saab LH manual. 22451 is a mixture problem, running lean due to an air leak.
The LH manual has a guide where you look up the symptom, and it recommends what to look at, based on experience. For Engine Starts and Immediately Dies, they recommend looking at the IAC valve as #1, followed by Fuel Pressure Regulator, Induction system (air blockage), and fuel pump/non return valve. Oh yeah, ECU isn't mentioned.
For an uneven, hunting idle, #1 is IAC, #2 is induction system, #3 is throttle position sensor, and #4 is the Evap canister system. I know that the canister has been checked, but I'm not overly impressed with his throughness. What was checked?
OK, what do I get out of this? That your car is likely running rich. This would show up on the spark plugs. They don't have to be fluffy black of really rich - you might be running slightly rich.
If your Indy didn't check the FPR pressure, he should. If he didn't check AIC (or IAC) operation, then shame on him - it's an idle problem, for crying out loud!
At the end of all of the tests, if nothing else pans out, they say to replace the ECU. But there is A LOT to try before that. I'd reseat the connector on the ECU. That's free. I'd add a wire from the case of the O2 sensor to the lifting eye on the engine, to make sure you've got a good ground. That's pretty cheap, too.
Vacuum leak (purge valve, hoses, etc), FPR, check the plugs, make sure the O2 sensor has a good ground. Maybe an AMM on the way out, but plenty to check before replacing that. Yes, the ECU could be bad. But very, very unlikely. The typical failure of the ECU is for it to stop working. Not for it to run just a wee bit rich.
I hope this helps.
