Today I cut the wire back to good copper and put on a new end. If I touch the wire to the alternator case with the ignition on, I get a battery light. No light when hooked up to the D+ terminal, though. I only get battery voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running.
The alternator was ok last fall and other than take it out, clean it, and put it back in, all I've done is replace the VR. The commutator slip rings had shoulders on the sides of where the brushes run. I cleaned things up with electrical parts cleaner and a piece of wood, but was a little concerned that the new brushes would seat ok. I'm not clear enough on alternators to know whether the battery light voltage gets to ground through the field circuit via the brushes or whether something else is going on, like a bad diode, but I don't think I've done anything to cause that.
Thanks much for your help.
