Call me picky, but I do a lot of work with gloves on. I buy a few boxes of rubber gloves from the local warehouse store (we use slave labor and pass the savings on to you!)
Is it a messy job? Depends. Engine mounts take quite a few years to fail, so it's usually an older car you're working on. So if the car has had some oil leaks, been driven through rain, etc., most cars have a layer of oily dirt on the bottom pan. However, I've got one car (owned since new) that is nice and clean down there. Don't know why - but she's clean as a whistle - a pleasure to work on.
Lower engine mounts aren't that bad. I definitely recommend reading Quasi's writeup - I found separating the sub-frame to be very helpful. I keep a 6" length of 2X4 around, to keep the sections apart. It's not a bad job at all. I find it takes a while, simply because if I've got the car jacked up and the liner off, I'm also probably doing the belt and pulleys, and giving the harmonic balancer and main seal a look-at. So quite often I do a bunch of things while I'm in there. Take your time, and get a bunch of rubber gloves - toss them away when dirty.
