I had one go at about 133k miles, when trying to start up for the day. Usually once it starts, it'll keep running until you shut down. When I looked at the pump post mortem, I saw it had dead spots in the rotation where it wouldn't start spinning, but jarring it a bit or turning it slightly would let it start up.
It might be interesting to measure the current draw of the pump while in operation, as a means of monitoring. If it changes from some normal range, it may be an indication the pump is starting to go, or it's working hard to push fuel past a dirty filter.
I'll measure the current next chance I get on the two samples I can, and post it as a data point. Should be easy enough to do from the fuse connection.
I don't think there's any other way to anticipate failure, other than the beginnings of intermittent failure, where it won't kick in until the temperature cools down or heats up. When it works, it works, and when it doesn't, it's generally just completely dead, without a middle ground, especially since the fuel pressure regulator compensates for much of the variations in output.
Other thing might be to try to do preemptive replacement based on mileage, but it just doesn't seem well defined enough to rely on, because of the wide range. It doesn't appear to be something that fails like clockwork at some specified mileage.
