Are air bags effective?

I have trained myself (although I have never had to test it) that if I get into a front end collission, I will probably see it coming, and I will put my arms over my face and lean forward against the steering wheel and pull my feet up off the pedals. This is a combination of airline "assume the position" pre-crash recommendation (lean forward against seat in front of you with arms in front of your face)and common knowledge among car racers, who get their feet off the pedals before a crash to avoid broken legs. However, in an air bag equipped car, it will probably propel me backwards and possibly cause major injury. What do you think?, besides the fact that I have too much time on my hands to concern myself with such a subject.
