This is the way I see it:

We can both agree that the risk of having a car crash is many times higher than the risk of the airbags deploying without cause, right? We can also agree that an airbag will not hurt you besides minor burns if you're wearing your seatbelt (which you always do, right?) and are sitting at a sensible distance from the steering wheel. And finally we can (hopefully) also agree that in a serious crash airbags do save lives.

So you see, it's a matter of weighing one risk against another. The miniscule risk of the airbag not working as it should (never heard of an airbag blowing up, only of a couple that fired when they weren't supposed to) compared to the risk of being in a serious car crash (happens all the time).

For me it's a no brainer. I choose the option that has the highest probability of being beneficial and the smallest risk of being harmful.

A small anecdote:
Back in the day when seatbelts were just starting to be mounted in all cars, there were many people who didn't want to use them because they thought they would be trapped in burning cars, get choked, have their rib cage crushed etc. Many also thought they didn't need them because they could just hold on to the steering wheel real tight.

Now, no person in their right mind would claim that seatbelts aren't crucial for surviving a car wreck.
