I'm a bit more comfortable driving around in cars without airbags, though I appreciate the insurance discount and safety they can provide, so I wouldn't go so far as to remove them (but then again, I DO have a glovebox- :) There's a degree of safety and resultant tradeoffs, but the proper use of the seat belts is sufficient for me.
I'm always mindful of the placement of my arms while driving; a friend had an accident where the airbag deployed, and it broke his arm because it was in front of the airbag upon impact, possibly in the process of turning. They're not as pillowy as one might picture when you get in the way of the initial inflation, even though they start deflating immediately.
Shuffle steering rather than overlapping hand-over-hand is good practice. If you have the presence to do so, keep your hands out to the sides of the wheel before an imminent collision.
