Only four of my high school daughter's friends can drive a stick shift. That means they buy and drive automatics--just like their parents.
I remember years ago--like the late 60s--saying to people I worked with, that automatic trannies were eventually going to become standard equipment and it would be impossible to get a manual trans in most cars. Everyone thought I was crazy. Of course they thought I was crazy to drive European cars, too.
One of the things I think is interesting is you can rent manual transmission cars all day long in Europe from places like Hertz, but they are all but unavailable in the US.
