Either a high quality crimp or soldered and heat shrinked connection is what I would consider permanent; the other options are temporary. I just bought a package of Scotch crimp/heat shrink connectors that I'm going to redo my O2 sensor splices with; $3.86 for an 8 pk from Walmart. I soldered and heat shrinked it, but I'm not comfortable with it because the wire on the OEM sensor harness wasn't compatible with solder.
I've seen some 'professional' alarm and stereo installers use twist and electrical tape connections; pretty scary. It'll likely last beyond the warranty period, but that's guaranteed trouble for the future in intermittents. Hopefully that's rare, but the quickie do-it-while-you-wait joints just may be relying on that kind of connection to get it out the door, so I would be careful to check them out first.
I installed an autostarting alarm and used solder/heat shrink connections throughout, and haven't had any problems. Spending the extra time for a good connection will pay off in the long run.
If you anticipate it being temporary to some extent, and want to remove it, the wire nut/twist cap connections should work okay if you get the right size and tape it afterwards to keep it from backing off. And only if it's inside the car, if it's exposed to weather, I wouldn't even consider it as a temporary measure; it'll probably turn pukey green in short order from corrosion.
