I wholeheartedly agree. You need a strong mechanical connection prior to soldering. I like spade connectors with the plastic hoods. First you slide the hood on the wire, then the spade connector, crimp to hold, solder, then bring the plastic hood over the connector. I learned something new about heat shrink tubing being strain relief. There is a lot of strain right where the wires enter the spade connector. Those plastic hoods move the strain point back a little, but I'm going to use more heat shrink tubing.
BTW, it also takes me forever to do a stereo installation. But I've never had one fail.
