Both the C900 and 9000 were way above average for safety, the 9000 being a little better. I have a '91 9kt, same setup as the '92, but without TCS. I can tell you it is an extremely fast car. I had an '87 900S. Not a fast car but still fun to drive.
Regarding reliability, they were comparable. The usual electrical gremlins, brake calipers, as well as transmission rebuilds on both. Saabs are known for going well over 100K miles, but somehow they end up with a reputation for unreliability for all the things that go wrong in high-mileage land. Expect problems with the tranny in just about any car at over 150K miles. In the 9kt, with all the torque they produce, you would want to know that that '92 had a rebuilt unit in it. As far as friends telling you Saabs are unreliable, ask them how many they have owned, and if the answer is zero, they aren't a reliable source of info. I've had five Saabs now, and I've been happy with the reliability issue. It has everything to do with how well they are maintained.
