I think Advance Auto does it around here (Harrisburg, PA), although I haven't used it. The tool I asked for was not one that was on their list of loanable tools (and I can't remember what I asked for!).
I know that you've mentioned serveral conversations with your indy mechanic. Is it the kind of friendship that he would loan you the torque wrench for the afternoon (you do everything BUT tighten those bolts, go get the wrench, use it, take it right back). My indy came to my wedding, and I still stop out and see him from time to time, even though he doesn't do repairs any more (fixes up used cars to sell these days).
Any grease monkey friends? One of my pals is a motorcycle junkie, and he has a set of really big sockets that I've borrowed on occasion.
Or you could use the Click and Clack mantra:
"Every repair is an excuse to buy a new tool!"
Good luck
Urby
