I wonder if chronic overheating has caused a lubrication issue. Timing chain problems come to mind. Maybe the chain tensioner gave up the ghost, and the chain is flopping around. Check all externals first with the engine running, and use the "hose stethoscope" trick to localize the noise. If you can't find anything there, I think the second step ought to be to pull the valve cover and check the timing chain, to see if it's tight. Hopefully it's not a problem that's deeper in the engine.
