I have an '88 and a '91 9kt, and had a '95 CSE (RIP). We now have a '01 9-5 wagon to replace the '95.
The 9000 definitely became more mild mannered in later model years. The '95 has a softer suspension than even the '88. My '91 has the sport suspension, and I put Koni shocks on it, so it rides the firmest of all our cars. Of course, I like to take cloverleafs at higher speeds, so it works for me. All three of the 9kt's are faster than our '01 9-5 wagon. The 9-5 has 170 hp, and the '88 has only 160, and now it is on base boost only, but it's still faster. I see the 9-5 as a soft, family-oriented car, very refined, but not as extremely so as American luxury cars, thankfully.
The 9000 is roomy, fun to drive, fast, and it has incredible brakes. If you are looking to collect, I would recommend waiting for the right model. Either get a '91, which is one of the classic years, but you'll have trouble finding a good one, or a '96 or '97 Aero. As a collector, you'll want those fancy Aero seats. Personally, I think they hold my shoulders in a bit too rounded of a posture, and it's hard to put the rear seat down, so they're not for me, but they are considered a hot commodity.
Best of luck.
