The Oxygen sensor tells the computer how much fuel to meter into the intake system. When there is a fault in that sensor, or any of the other sensors (temp, MAF, etc)...you can get a rich running situation. This can foul spark plugs, can destroy your Catlyist (catylatic converter), or cause other rough running problems.
For my money (since O2 sensors aren't free), see if you have a friend that you can swap the DI cassette with to see if that solves your problem. DI Cassettes tend to get worn out and are much easier to replace than O2 sensors. A faulty DI cassette can cause weak spark and unburned fuel to get into your exhaust. Unburned fuel can cause too much soot and foul and O2 sensor. If the DI swap doesn't solve your problem, change your O2 sensor. Obviously if your car runs better with the DI swap, you will have to go buy your own...your friend will want his back.
At this point, I am suprised import parts shops don't keep a loaner DI cassette because they are so expensive and there isn't any reliable way that I am aware of to test yours other than to swap it with a good one. $300 is a lot to spend on a new DI if you cant make certain it is the problem.
