I think the O2 sensor is a pain to change. It's in a very tight space, and its wires are attached to the side of the engine (opposite end from the transmission). Being frugal, I bought a cheaper O2 sensor and had to splice in new wires. That involved trying to solder and fit shrink tubing in the constricted space under the AC compressor.
The other issue is that, when you screw in the new sensor, if the wire is already fixed in place to its mountings, you have to first twist the sensor about 6 turns counterclockwise, so that when you screw it in, there won't be any kinks in the wire. I just found the whole job frustrating.
As for the DI cassette, when mine failed I first noticed that it would start missing at full throttle, which progressed to missing at half throttle. However, it's an easy thing to test. Swapping in a DI cassette takes about 5 to 10 minutes. You just need someone around with a working DI cassette.
I second the new mechanic idea. Or maybe someone already seconded it and I'm 10th-ing it. Anyway, advising you to use high test gasoline indicates that they don't know anything about octane ratings. I envision their thinking as going like this, "I think I'll tell her to change her gasoline and to hang fuzzy dice from her rear view mirror. No, maybe not the fuzzy dice."
