Julia, I am not a mechanic. Others on this board are far more knowledgable about this than I am, but I will tell you my experiences. I don't think a bad O2 sensor would cause your car to run as poorly as you describe. When I was told that my O2 sensor needed to be replaced, it was NOT causing the extreme symptoms you are reporting. Can you replace it yourself? Yes. If you can locate the place it plugs in (same place it unplugs, of course). Just follow the wires from the sensor) And if you can reach it. That was my problem. I could not get my big hands in there. If you can do that, you can change the O2 sensor. Maybe it's easier to reach from underneath. I did not have a lift. Now, your symptoms DO sound like it could be the fuel pump. It's possible for the pump to have enough pressure to run the engine at iddle (very rough) but not to have enough pressure to run the engine with any load. Get someone to test the pressure at the fuel rail. Your mechanic should know this before he replaces the pump. When my pump went bad (1995 CS) I had only 14 pound of pressure at the fuel rail. The car would start and run at idle, rough and hesitating, but NO power. I could drive slowly on the level (bucking and coughing) but not up any hills. It is possible to just change the inner part of the fuel pump. Much cheaper. Changing the DI cassett is a pretty easy and basic test that you should do first. I agree with others that you may need to find another mechanic. Good luck
