If there is too much fluid in the brake reservoir, it will simply overflow and ruin the paint on the firewall.
The level DROPS to the MAX line when the system pressurizes. When the car is turned off, the fluid slowly comes out of the accumulator (black sphere) and back into the reservoir. So it's normal for the fluid level to be higher than MAX after the car has been sitting. But even if you overfill it some, the level drops when the car starts.
Sorry to hear about your tranny incident, but I don't think it was due to excess brake fluid. From the sound of the failure, I'd wonder if a tooth broke off an jammed in there. Perhaps the shifting forks got messed up and you managed to engage two gears at the same time, which would cause pretty much instant stoppage. But not the brakes, if that is any consolation.
