Actually, I've talked to some 9000 owners that own a Maxx, and they feel it's pretty similar. On that note, this past summer my wife and I went to look at one, hoping that it would be.

One major thing we value about our 9000 is the huge trunk, and amazing width. Did you know a 9000 is wider in the back than a 9-5? The Maxx is MUCH narrower in the 'hips', and the trunk is foreshortened. Yes, you can make it bigger by pushing the rear seat forward, but it's still not as big.

The driving dynamics aren't too bad, but I agree, the seats weren't very nice, in my opinion. As to materials, it's a $12K less car than a 9-5 (list).

We looked at the Mazda 6 hatchback. Much to our amazement, it is actually slightly bigger in the back than our beloved 9000! From a functionality standpoint, it was quite nice. And the V6 is no slouch. Material quality is a bit flimsy. The hardest part was the Mazada instrument panel - it looks like one of those cheesy boomboxes, with lots of big plastic chrome rings.

I think I'd do the Mazda first. In the end, I found a nice '97 CSE.

In Europe, they have a wonderful array of 4-door hatches from Citroen and the like that we don't see here. Now those cars remind me of a modern incarnation of a 9000.
