Very common for serp belt related stuff to make noise

In particular, the tensioner pulley and/or idler pulley in that circuit. Lots of mechanics diagnose this as chain noise.
You might try replacing these items, as they're about $60 in parts or so, and you can do them yourself if you have modest mechanical skills. If they're noisy it's because their bearings are shaky and you should address this in any case.
If the noise persists, or if professional and Saab-experienced opinion is that it really is chain noise, then at your mileage and with your Aero pedigree it may well be worth considering a chain job. Although you might only need to replace the upper chain guide, a hard rubber piece that lives in the valve cover (which you removed to inspect the chain), and costs something like $10.
You won't be able to tell anything of value regarding your chains by a visual inspection or poking them -- if there's a problem it's generally deeper in the engine, in particular with the balance shaft sprockets in that model year.
