Gear shifting and popping - a little long

I've done my homework on the archives and learned a bit, but there's some room for new commentary here. My '90 9kt has had a suspect (5-speed) tranny for a while now, mostly because of a whine in the box somewhere (much worse with winter tires and steel wheels than summers with aluminum wheels). Now I'm getting more consistently another few issues.
1) Doesn't "pop", but subtlety moves out of 2nd when I'm already moving and decelerating. It doesn't pop into neutral, but the selector has slid out of 2nd slightly. I find out because I move back to the gas pedal after slowly rounding a corner (e.g. in a parking lot), and I get easy revs from the engine instead of the expected result. That has occurred a few times this last week. 2nd gear also has the most worn synchro (by shift ease and feel).
2) I'm getting a lot of "bounce" from the engine in first or second when I let of the gas (e.g. red light comes up while moving slowly towards it). You know the feel? It's like the engine and tranny are bouncing from the reaction to letting of the gas at low speed and leaving it in gear.
I've replaced the motor mounts and checked the linkage alignment, so that should be ruled out I presume. What I'm really trying to do is know when my eventual tranny failure is close so I can plan accordingly. If the moving out of gear is near-tranny death, I need to take action! TIA...
