Here's how to test if it's the shims....

The problem is not that the clutch slips on older compressors. What happens instead is that over time, wear increases the air gap in the magnetic clutch mechanism until it can't pull down any longer and the compressor shuts down. This normally happens after temperatures under the hood have increased enough to increase the air gap from just-close-enough to just-too-far -- so the compressor runs fine until the car is fully warmed up, then dies.
You can check if it's the shims by waiting for the compressor to quit (with the car running and warmed up), and very lightly AND CAREFULLY tapping on the end of the compressor clutch. It should be enough to get the compressor turning for a few seconds (maybe longer?) before it eventually shuts down again. If this test works, you just need to remove a shim. If it does not work (i.e., the compressor never jumps to life) then it's likely your problem lies elsewhere.
