Bernie, I'm glad you asked this question!
I have same exact car-same exact problem. I'm a second owner.
The previuos owner had this problem for years and never got it fixed. They kept changing AC relay, recharging, ect., but problem kept coming back!
I would try to follow steps advised to you above, but be aware-Saab used 2 types of AC compressors- Seiko & Sanden. Unfortunately, I have Sanden and in the clutch R&R procedure manual calls to install same quantity of shims, but later says to adjust it? To remove a clutch on Sanden procedure calls to remove compressor completely and use a vise and puller for it. Seiko clutch is "in car" procedure. I know it's confusing and believe me I'm very confused with all this too. Hopefully somebody can clarify that shims can be removed from Sanden compressor "in the car" if that's what you have in yours.
