I have now replaced 3 wheel bearings on two different 9000s ('89 and '92) and I had different symptoms with each.
The first one ('89 passenger) went verrrry slowly and gave me lots of time to figure it out (slowly increasing grinding noise).
One ('89 driver) started making loud grinding noises all at once and that one actually came apart as I removed it - so, though it was definately bad for awhile, it wasn't noticable.
The most recent one ('92 driver) went from no symptoms to serious wobbling in the course of a week, and I never did hear any sort of grinding noises, just a scary wobble on right turns.
Now, I'm waiting to see what that 4th one does (passenger side, '92)...
To Urby: My experience is they last about 125-150K miles, so you may want to check the service records...
