I was surprised at Karthic's rather extreme failure. I can't even conceive of a wheel bearing failure so drastic as to produce a noticeable difference in toe-in. He may have a follow-up after repairs are done that can shed some light on this. My experience has been that they can get very loose without falling apart. I'am appalled at how loose mine got without my knowledge. I do not see this as a preventative item except for extreme maintenance. It's very, very obvious when one is bad. The rotor assembly MOVES and you can clearly see that the hub is moving with the rotor. As I said before, easy to remove once the axle is out.
With Steve's comment regarding not rolling with the axle out (he could be correct about that), it makes me inclined to retorgue my axle nut and check for play again. If he's correct, I could be getting a symptomatic failed bearing that will disappear with reinstallation of the axle. I wonder if one should grease the bearing at this point? It will most certainly come apart if removed - - I know that from removing one earlier with a lot of play in it.
