pulled it out the left side. Before doing this, I disconected the hoses at the pump, couldn't see any easy way to pull it out the right side with the hoses attached, the pinion housing and steering input shaft got hung up on the manual transmission input shaft - it might be different on automatic cars, or perhaps with enough twisting it may actually come out the right side. I can't remember how long the job took as I was doing a lot of other work at the time, had new hoses made up, etc.
