as VTSnaab and Turrbo say, 93 and 94 Aeros (and regular turbos too in some number) are cursed with the dreaded Traction Control System (TCS) which has a tendency to act up and default into the even-more-dreaded Limp Home Mode, which can be a simple fix or can put your bank account into Lose Your House mode.

Considered a risky range of model years for that reason primarily. 91-93 2.3s do have a potential for timing chain failure, which causes extensive damage if it occurs. See if the timing and balance shaft chains have been replaced.

In 1994 Saab changed the engine block of its universal 2.3 engine, so that makes interchangeability of mechanical bits more difficult. Concurrent with the block change, some electronic changes were made in the engine harness too. That means that 1993 was the only year of its type electronically. But electrical gremlins are relatively rare despite that fact.

Another note is that the transmissions in these cars can be problematic, whether automatic or five speed. Earlier five speeds were more reliable, but for some reason (maybe the 220 hp) 93 and on five speeds have seen more failures than earlier types. This applies to any 9000 from 93 and on. However, this doesn't guarantee you'll have problems.

Having said all that, I don't think the price is too far out of line. It just depends on how much cash you have in reserve to pay for repairs -- probably want to have two to three thousand stashed away if needed. But if you're not a habitual wrench turner, I'd encourage you to look around for another car. In fact, any 9000 can be a real financial bear to keep fixed. Of course, your BMW has probably already conditioned you for that!
