I would have thought that I need better airflow too, but what led me to beginning this was that the car wasn't getting cold even going down the road.
What do you mean by the statment "if your not running your system in recirculate, that will help quite a bit." I always figured if you were drawing the cool air from the inside of the cabin, then the A/C system wouldn't have to work as hard.
Also, the fan that cycles on the radiator is on the same relay as your compressor. So whenever your compressor is on, then the radiator fan is on too. I found this out the hard way when my compressor wouldn't come on about 2 years ago.
