I have the same problem with my 91 9KT, I've replaced the water pump twice, been through 3 thermostats, and flushed the system twice. The thermal switch is pretty new, and does work, but it seems like it doesn't kick on as soon as it used to. I'm about to get a new gauge sensor (only 7 bucks).
I'd like to believe it's not my harmonic balancer slipping, since it's less than a year old, and I haven't heard anything that sounds like slipping. However, the symtoms do point to bad flow. :(
My next move may be to replace my catylitic converter with something that's not plugged up....like a pipe. The car gets a little stinky lately when I get on it.
Let the board know if you find a solution.
