I'm confused; any time this topic is raised, people talk about how to compress the shock as though that's a problem. Actually, that's just about slipping the belt on and off, too. The actual problem is how, when changing the belt, to unscrew the left-handed tensioner pulley bolt without causing the shock to break apart. That's when the question do you need the tool comes in. David Ingram relates how to do this without the tool--you leave the belt on to absorb the pressure, and loosen the tensioner pulley bolt first; then, compress the shock to release the belt, completely unscrew the bolt, remove the pulley, and the belt. This works provided: 1) you remember to leave the belt on as you loosen the bolt, and 2) loosening the bolt doesn't require a lot of pressure. It's worth a try that way--worked for me, too--but you'd feel better if you had a tool to back you up if it won't.
