the risk with our MacGuyver method is that if the bolt gets suitably tightened (even after preloosening with the belt in place) then when you go to remove the bolt without the belt on, you can cause the tensioner shock to overextend and come apart.
That's happened to me a few times, and I've usually just thrown everything together and driven on with no problems, but for me that's only happened if I didn't first preloosen the bolt before removing the belt. For me the preloosening has always left the bolt loose enough to come out without stressing the shock.
