Maybe fuel pump Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 5 Oct 2005 05:33:26 In Reply to: Hmmm. No start: CPS? 92 2.3 n/a, David Ingram, Tue, 4 Oct 2005 20:37:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That sounds a lot like the fuel pump. They can develop a dead spot on the commutator, and if the pump stops on that dead spot, it won't restart. If it's on the hairy edge, whanging it may help, but if it isn't near an edge, beating it won't. Unless you remove the cover over the fuel tank and hit the pump housing directly, hitting the gas tank won't help much.
A quick test for the fuel pump - pop open the fuse box, and Jumper fuse 14 to fuse 22. You don't even need the key ON. There is a little gap on the back of each fuse where you can see conductor - jumper either one on a fuse (assuming you've checked the fuses!) to a gap on the other fuse. Listen for the pump to run. You may have to open the trunk, and hold your ear near the trunk floor, up by the back of the seats. If you hear the pump run, then the pump is OK, and it could be a lot of other things, like the CPS, pump relay, etc. But if you don't hear the pump run when you jumper these two fuses, the pump is most likely dead.
