I have a 1990 9KT, and before I replaced my mounts I had a lot of growling, especially when I was coasting or in neutral (5 speed). Before I changed my mounts I replaced 2 busted exhaust hangers and that fixed the growling rumbling noises, so give those a look, could be part of the problem. Quasi has a way to check the lowers, and I seem to remember him saying they would last 25K with aggressive shifting/driving (should be more for an auto???). The limiter mods would probably give you more life, I didn't do them for a few reasons, didn't have the right drill bit, those limiters are hardened, or AC hose, noone would sell me or give me any. I was able to put a piece of standard heater hose (3/4" I think) around the stop tab though, should limit it by a bit. Hope this helps.
