...stock speakers. Even if they are "Clarion" they're still crap compared to aftermarket speakers, especially MB Quarts. If you want to hear more bass from the rear (recommended) without getting subwoofers, I'd say look for a set of 2 or 3 way 6x9's. 2 ways are going to have the woofer and a coaxial tweeter in the 6x9, while the 3 ways will have a woofer, tweeter, and supertweeter. I think that 2 ways sound a bit better for bass becuase you don't have all those super high, often irritating sounds overpowering the lows. If you've got subwoofers in the trunk then all that stuff is fine. I know the rears in all 9ks also had a component tweeter in the earlier years (when they had 6.5" rounds) and in the CS cars the rear 6x9s were paired with like a 3.5". I'd just disconnect the 3.5" and get good 6x9's. Even with 3-ways they'll still have more bass sound then stock stuff (more so with a new hu). The popping you're getting is the rear speakers complaining that they're turned up too loud and are giving up the ghost. Obviously those nice new components you got up front can take the power while 10 year old factory stuff cant :)

A real good way to get bass out of 6x9's is to put more power to them using an external amplifier (not the head unit). Say 75w to each rear speaker. Ideally when you start going this route you should have already junked the factory head unit and wiring for some better stuff. Ray V has the right idea with head units...Nakamichis are hard to beat. SUPERB sound, factory looks, no bells and whistles like LCDs with dolphins and motorized facplates.

I think I covered everything...any more questions, just ask.
