For clutch: get it up to 60 in fifth gear, then push the pedal all the way to the floor. If the revs go up and the speed stays the same, your clutch is slipping and needs immediate repair. Major PITA. Also look for ANY tranny whine, especially in third and fifth. If any whine, RUN from the car.
Airco not working is expensive job, but with winter coming up, ACC will do fine. Check tires ($$$). Also when driving, look out for position steering wheel (should be straight), alignment, balancing. Meaning: when doing sixty, how does it feel?
My '88T has terrible wind noise at 75+, coming from hatch area. Must be a rubber somewhere, but can't find it. Look out for this as well.
Keep in mind that these cars are made for long high-speed stretches. If it doesn't do this well, it's no use, it's just expensive and heavy.
IMO, any 9k from '87 shouldn't cost more than about 500 $$. Who wants these cars anyway?
