A flat wrench is perfect for reaching in from the top to the two inside bolts. But I found the two outside ones best reached frem between the wheel and the wheel arch with a long extension and 10mm socket after lying on my back under the car and got no where except grime on my face.
The good thing about the old style is simply unbolt and bolt. But it is less robust than the new style. That doesn't mean the new style last forever as I pointed out. I think some time during the 1994 production year the shift linkage was switched. The advantage of the new style linkage is of course its robustness because you can not separate the rubber from the metal part. They are mated in the factory. Imagine the four bolt set-up is replaced by an integral part. It also means you need to remove the collar bolt on the shifter side and a tapered pin on the gear box side to remove the assembly. (removing the tapered pin could be a major PITA.) Further, you need to reallign the gears and the shifter after installing new. It is also much more expensive. $50 as I recall instead of $9.
You can change from old to new but personally I would not go to the new style for the sake of change.
