When you turn the key, it moves a lever on the back of the tumbler that moves a lever in the latch. The way the lock/latch works is that in the lock position, it disconnects the inside and outside door handles from the latch release on the door jamb. The door lock actuator connects to the button on top of the door. That actuator/button mechanism should also flip a lever that allows the door handles to engage the latch (unlocked). So if the actuator/button mechanism has a little lost motion, it may not be moving that lever.
