The question dates back to the days of carburators, chokes, and such. The first car I had (1944 Army Jeep) had a manual choke. One was well aware that to keep a cold engine running the mixture had to be kept rich. Therefore, the longer it took the engine to warm up the longer the cylinder walls were being washed with raw gasoline and the greater the wear. With fuel injection it is less of a problem but it is still better to go ASAP but go easy. A working engine warms up more quickly (look up: "Carnot Cycle").
