I had exactly the same problem. A squeal which I was sure was coming from the belt assembly. I replaced the idler pulley, thinking it was that, same problem.
It turned out that it was the heat sheild on the catalytic converter! To check it, jack up the car and with the car running and making the noise(mine made the noise more with the A/C on), push on various parts of the heat shield and it will go away if thats it. The easy fix is to take a coffee can, cut out the top and the bottom, slit the can legnthwise, flatten it a little and jam it between the heat shield and the cat.
If thats not the problem, with the car running, take a piece of hose, put one end in your ear and put the other end near each component of the belt assembly. You will quickly hear where the noise is coing from.
