Stranded for the first time

So I was traveling home on the expressway and heard a strange clunk. Everything seemed fine. A few minutes later the charging light came on. My first thought was that the alternator or rectifier had died (both original). A minute later and the steering gets heavier. At this point I assume I have thrown the belt and know I need to get off the road ASAP before the car overheats. I am watching the temperature gage. I have been very careful to keep the cooling system in good shape as I would like to avoid having to replace the head gasket.
All of a sudden the temperature gage goes up. It is still below the red. I am already in the right lane. As I pull of the exit the needle goes into the red. Right of the exit is a Toyota dealer so I pull into the parking lot and park. I open the hood to have a look but the lighting is not very good. I do not have a flashlight and GM removed the light under the hood.
From what I could see the main pulley on the end of the crankshaft has separated. I believe this is a known problem. As far as I know it has never shown any signs of wobble.
The temperature gage was probably in the red for 1-2 minutes. There was not much steam when I opened the hood and not that much coolant came out. My biggest worry is the cylinder head gasket.
