Aaron thanks for your thoughts and for ideas on how to spot a head gasket that is on the way out.
Thinking about it this morning I was not as proactive as I should have been. Especially since the belt on the 9000 is one of my big concerns. I was worried about being stranded. It never occured to me that it could happen in a place that would leave me with no option but to let the car overheat.
When I got the car I had the belt replaced. My plan was that when the belt needed replacing again in 30K miles I would also replace the idler and tensioner pulleys and perhaps the tensioner shock. I never did Ari's test and I never painted a line on the pulley. Worse than that a few weeks ago the car made a squealing noise in the cold. It only lasted a couple of minutes and I did not think much of it.
So the question is what should I replace now? I am sure my indy will want to do the main/idler/tensioner pulleys as well as the belt and the tensioner assembly. I would prefer to avoid that. Here is what I know,
Belt 9K miles ago
Tensioner + Idler bearings (receipt does not say pulleys?) 47K miles ago
Tensioner shock 108K miles ago (original)
Thanks in advance
Rupert
