The thermostat looks something like a toy Top, a wide disk with a spring mechanism running through it. On the disk, you'll see a small hole, maybe 1/8" in diameter. Sometimes it has a little metal rod through it, flattened on both sides so it doesn't fall out. That's the vent hole.
When the thermostat goes in, it sits at roughly a 45 degree angle. Putting the thermostat in 'up' means that the hole should be close to the top of the engine, versus the bottom.
If the thermostat you have doesn't have a vent hole, it may be for an older 900. The 900 cooling system is manually bled. The 9000 system is automatically bled, and requires the vent hole for proper operation.
In a form of finger wagging, the thermostat is a moving part and a wear item. I like to replace them every 2-3 years, when I flush the coolant. Yes, quite often the fail open, and the only downside is no heat. However, if it fails closed, it can overheat and destroy the engine quickly, no matter how cold it is outside. Not the typical failure mode, but a pretty nasty one. So I like to replace them before they fail.
