Seriously. If I tell one person what another person told me, almost invariably the second person will contradict the first person. Sometimes just in minor ways and sometimes 180 degrees. This is obviously an issue I've got great interest in because of the financial stakes, and I've talked to the guys at my shop, friends (who have no financial interest in my car) who work at another shop, and various other people, plus I've done some research myself. Here is the conversation that I've had about ten times:
Me: I think I should get the tranny fluid flushed. It's an older car, I don't know if it's ever been done, but I keep hearing that this is an essential maintenance step.
Expert: (gets a worried look on their face) Are you sure you want to do that?
Me: Well, the owner's manual says... and the Haynes book says... and everyone on Saabnet says... and the info in "Auto Repair for Dummies" says... and it's got almost 131,000 miles on it...
Expert: (gives me a short lecture on why I should not mess with something that is not having problems, and usually invokes something like "a flush can dislodge impurities that were stuck somewhere inside, which can then cause the gunk to start floating around, which can end up causing major damage that you were pretty much protected from when that stuff was stuck. After ten years, it's doing its job, just let it keep going.")
I know for certain that if I had a NEW auto transmission this would be on my regular maintenance list.
