dislodging gunk argument is gunk

The ATF pressure within an operating AT is high. I don't drive an AT myself, but I was in a vehicle once when an AT seal gave way and the ATF poured out of the tranny. Incredible billowing white smoke behind the vehicle. So if there is gunk within, either it will remain where it is, such as when parts have a thin coating of that resin type stuff you see within an engine, or it won't. Besides, if you're flushing and you shake some gunk loose, it comes out in the ATF that you're draining, right?
