But you have to think about where the experts

get *their* opinions from.
They could well be repeating what they were told when they first learned the trade. That it may be inaccurate doesn't matter because it's what they've always thought: "My mind's made up. Don't confuse me with the facts."
Not messing with something that's not having problems? Then why do preventive maintenance? The car works...why change the plugs, the oil, the coolant, the brake fluid?
Consider it this way: Most cars can have all the ATF changed using a pump. This doesn't really work on a Saab, and while it *can* be done, it is not recommended due to the pressure it puts on the system. But you can do a triple flush gradually, say over 3,000 miles, doing about a gallon at a time. Then you have not stressed anything and you have essentially new fluid in there. In addition, you get to eyeball the filter and magnet. If they are reasonably clean on the first drain, then you know things are basically OK . If you see huge amounts of crud and chunks of metal on the magnet then you know things are not so good. This arms you with some knowledge. Can changing the fluid bring an existing trouble to light? Maybe. But the problem is there whether you do the change or not.
If you knew your motor oil had rarely, if ever, been changed, but the PO had just changed the filter and added a quart every 3,000 miles (I knew a guy who ran his cars like this), would you change the oil?
